Winegrowing at this vineyard is carefully planned and executed to optimize vine health, fruit quality, and long-term sustainability. The planted varietal is Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 7, also known as the Concannon Clone—a widely respected selection with lineage tracing back to the historic “Concannon Mother Vine.” This clone is favored for its consistent quality and adaptability. The vines are grafted. onto 3309C rootstock, chosen for its superior drought tolerance and compatibility with Livermore’s deep, well-draining soils, especially important in a region known for intense summer heat and irregular rainfall. The vineyard employs a drip irrigation system to deliver precise water management throughout the growing season, helping to mitigate challenges posed by drought and high temperatures.
Structurally, the vines are trained using a Vertically Shoot-Positioned (VSP) trellis system with a single curtain canopy. This widely adopted method in the Livermore Valley enhances sunlight exposure, reduces shading, and allows for effective air circulation, all of which are vital for optimal fruit development. Vine spacing is set at 6 feet with 9-foot row spacing to accommodate high vigor growth and ensure adequate light penetration. Additionally, the VSP system supports mechanization, making it economically efficient for vineyard management and harvesting.
